In my first meeting with Aoife Cronin, she shared her vision for the script, inspired by the Gold Rush, vast deserts and the cinematic aesthetic of Paris, Texas. At the core of the story are cartographers, and immediately, the fabric calico came to mind. It is the perfect match. In an exciting development, we extended this concept to the set design which Emma Kelleher created a cohesive and striking visual aesthetic from my off cuts.
Calico, often used for mock-ups and trial samples, becomes a symbolic parallel to the cartographers’ work—maps in progress, guiding them toward an uncertain destination. This ties beautifully into the line from the play:
“God’s good brown earth.”
I had so much fun with the whole team and cannot wait for Edinburgh Fringe 2025.
